What are the advantages of custom lithium battery packs?

Lithium-ion battery cells come in a wide variety of specifications and models, including polymer pouch cells, cylindrical cells, and prismatic large single cells. The battery management system (BMS) for lithium-ion battery packs can also be customized to meet different product characteristics and requirements. These factors give lithium-ion battery packs the advantage of being highly customizable, offering flexibility in size and adjustable parameters.

The advantages of customizing lithium battery packs are reflected in the following three aspects:

Customizable Size

Lithium battery packs are constructed by combining lithium battery cells in series and parallel configurations. The size of the lithium battery pack can be customized according to the available space in the equipment.

 

Small lithium battery packs can use small cylindrical or polymer lithium battery cells, such as the common 18650 lithium battery cell, which has a diameter of 18mm and a height of 65mm. These can be arranged to create various custom sizes, even irregularly shaped lithium battery packs, to meet the placement requirements of the equipment.

 

Large lithium battery packs can use large single-cell packs, such as those from CATL and Guoxuan. Packing large single-cell lithium battery cells simplifies the process and makes manufacturing easier.

Customizable Parameters

Many parameters can be customized, such as voltage, capacity, current, communication functions, etc.

 

① Customized Voltage: Voltage can be customized based on the platform voltage of the load equipment system. For example, a 12V solar system can use a combination of 3 strings of ternary lithium batteries or 4 strings of lithium iron phosphate batteries; a 48V electric bicycle can use a combination of 13 strings of ternary lithium batteries or 16 strings of lithium iron phosphate batteries.

 

② Customized Capacity: Capacity can be customized based on the load’s operating time. The total capacity of the lithium battery pack is equal to the capacity of a single lithium battery cell multiplied by the number of parallel connections. Larger capacities are achieved by selecting larger single cells or increasing the number of parallel connections.

 

③ Customized Current: The power of the load equipment varies, and the matching lithium battery pack can also be customized with a specific current. For example, for a 1000W device with a 36V voltage platform system, a lithium battery protection board with a discharge current of 35A~40A can be selected. As for the charging current, it can be customized based on the capacity and charging time. For example, for a 10Ah lithium battery pack, if a full charge in about 5 hours is desired, a lithium battery protection board and charger with a charging current of approximately 2.5A~3A can be customized. Lithium battery protection boards and chargers with different customized currents can also be selected. Better suited to equipment usage requirements.

 

④ Customizable parameters. Many parameters for lithium battery packs can be customized, including temperature protection parameters, voltage and current protection parameters for overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, and short circuits, etc. Communication software functions can also be customized, such as a customized communication handshake protocol. This allows the lithium battery protection board (BMS) to communicate better with the load controller, monitor the lithium battery pack’s status in real time, and send control commands promptly.

Customizable packaging shells are available

Lithium battery packs can have customized shells according to the needs of the customized project. Common packaging shells for lithium battery packs include PVC film, plastic shells, aluminum cases, and iron cases.
